Classes Offered

Computer Applications

students learn to use the Microsoft Office 2007 suite to prepare professional grade assignments.

Computer Applications II

students learn more of the advanced concepts of the Microsoft Office 2007 suite.  They use skills learned in Computer Applications to create more dynamic assignments.

Cooperative Work Experience

students learn about work ethic, and other work related issues while holding down a job during the school year where they can practice concepts learned in class.

Financial Literacy

learning about the decisions adults make on a daily basis regarding budgeting, saving and investing.  Students will learn how to balance a check book, and invest money in the stock market using the Stock Market Game as a learning experience.

Computer Science

students learn all about computer programming, using the very best basic technology.  This course is a sampling of everything: Windows operating systems; C programming; Logical problem solving; Problem solving using flowcharts and algorithms simple C programs to improve logical skills among others.

Digital Image Editing

Includes Photoshop I and Photoshop II as a dual credit course (6 credits total) with Western New Mexico University. Students will familiarize themselves with image editing using Photoshop.  Students will use Photoshop tools for painting, retouching, and enhancing images.  Students will also learn to work in layers and layer selections.

Food and Nutrition

this course includes nutritional information with an emphasis on nutrients, nutrition, exercise and other factors necessary for a healthy lifestyle.  Students will use their skills to prepare snacks in class as well.

Wood Tech

students will be introduced to a various kinds of woods used in industry and offers experience in selected woodworking tools.  They may create more advanced pieces depending on their ability level.

Ag Leadership

is a student based class that emphasizes public speaking, parliamentary procedure, and individual development of leadership, agricultural science and FFA skills.  Two years of Ag Leadership I and II will fulfill a communication credit.
About Us
The Career and Technical Education Department of Socorro High School is a department made up of a wide range of classes from Food and Nutrition to Ag Leadership.  The department is focused on helping all students strive to do their very best and works very hard to show students real-world applications.  We are all about hands-on activities and supporting all subject areas into our lessons at any given time.  Providing more dual-credit courses with universities in New Mexico is something that would be great not only for our department but our students, parents and community as a whole.
Mission Statement
The Career and Technical Education Department of Socorro High School strives to offer students real-world applications of various subjects.  It is our goal to help each student succeed to the best of their ability and to help them in ALL subjects not just the elective they happen to be enrolled in.
Staff

Craig Addis

Mr. Addis was born in El Paso Texas. He and his wife moved to New Mexico in 1992 where they have lived for the last 19 years. He recently relocated to Socorro to teach business classes at Socorro High School. Mr. Addis was in the computer technology business for over 20 years and has a Bachelors’ degree in Information Technology from University of Phoenix. 

In 2007, Mr. Addis graduated from the University of Phoenix in Albuquerque with a Master’s degree in Secondary Education.  He is currently attending New Mexico Tech in Socorro.

Mr. Addis has been teaching for four years and has taught Computer, Technology, Business, and Science classes.

He is happily married and has three children. His hobbies include woodworking, ham radio, and model rocketry.

Janice Armijo (Department Chair)

Mrs. Armijo has been teaching at Socorro High School for 9 years (the school she graduated high school from).  She attended New Mexico State University (NMSU), the College of Santa Fe and most recently Grand Canyon University (GCU).  She currently teaches Computer Applications I and II, Cooperative Work Experience and Financial Literacy. 

While she is not teaching or being department head for the Vocational Department, Mrs. Armijo enjoys spending time with her family, reading and baking with her children.

Vernon Smith

Vernon Smith has been the Director of Technology for Socorro Consolidated Schools since July 2008 following teaching in the New York City Department of Education. He was appointed to a four-year term on the NM Council of Technology in Education (elected Chairperson for 2010-2011) and is the President-Elect of the New Mexico Society for Technology in Education (NMSTE). Prior to his educational career, he was a successful executive, manager and entrepreneur in advertising and publishing, and even enjoyed a second career as an on-air radio personality in NY and CT. He holds a Master’s degree from Drexel University in the Science of Instruction and is certified in Elementary Education and Instructional Technology. Mr. Smith teaches two dual credit courses with Western New Mexico University, Digital Image Editing I & II (Photoshop) and is an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE).
